President Joe Biden is fighting to convince inflation-weary voters that the U.S. economy is healthy. "America has the best economy in the world," he told NBC's Today Show on Monday, laying out an argument that is central to his reelection campaign. "The U.S. economy is leading the way for the global economy. It's driving the global economic train," Moody's Chief Economist Mark Zandi told CNBC. Besides sticky high prices that are projected to cool in the coming year, Zandi said that the fundamentals of the current U.S. economy are nearly ideal: "The economy is picture perfect.

Sean Rayford | Getty ImagesSince the Biden administration's first student loan forgiveness plan was rejected at the Supreme Court, it has been working on creating a new, legally viable relief package. The alternative plan, which has become known as Biden's "Plan B," could forgive the student debt for as many as 10 million people, according to one estimate. While Biden first attempted to cancel student debt through an executive order, he has now turned to the rulemaking process. Borrowers in repayment for 20 years or moreThose who have been carrying their student debt for decades may also benefit. watch nowStudent loan servicers also earn a fee per borrower per month, which advocates say discourages transparency around loan forgiveness opportunities.

President Joe Biden speaks about his economic plan at the Flex LTD manufacturing plant on July 6, 2023 in West Columbia, South Carolina. The Biden administration has released its proposal for which struggling borrowers should qualify for its new student loan forgiveness plan. At one point, it seemed possible that the "financial hardship" category had been dropped from what has become known as Biden's Plan B for student loan forgiveness. While Biden first attempted to cancel student debt through an executive order, he has now turned to the rulemaking process. Over three rulemaking sessions, the negotiators tasked with determining who will be eligible for the president's revised relief plan identified several categories that could signal hardship.

US Central Command confirmed the deaths and said eight personnel had to be medically evacuated from Jordan. US officials have said the drone that killed the US service members at Tower 22 was launched by Iran-backed militants and appeared to come from Syria. The US government has not yet named a specific militia they hold responsible.

The White House eagerly took credit Wednesday for December's strong retail sales numbers, which beat expectations due to higher consumer spending during the holiday season. "That's not an accident, that's Bidenomics at work," Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing. Retail sales popped 0.6% in December, above the 0.4% Dow Jones projection. The White House reported last week that it had received nearly 16 million small business applications in the first three years of Biden's presidency. Wednesday's retail sales victory lap came hours after the White House took fresh aim at corporate junk fees, issuing new regulations on big banks for overdraft fees.

The White House took aim at former President Donald Trump after the Republican presidential candidate front-runner said he hoped the economy would crash this year rather than during his theoretical second term. Economists have forecast economic slowing in 2024, but consensus has not gone so far as to cry recession. The White House used Trump's comment as an opportunity to tout Biden's economic wins and to draw contrasts with the previous administration. Trump has taken advantage of Biden's struggling economic narrative on the campaign trail, reminiscing on what he claims was a golden economy under his administration. Under Trump, the economy expanded for several years but the stock market ultimately came crashing down in 2020 at the advent of the pandemic while Trump was still in office.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jill Biden hosted a White House listening session on Monday with about 60 female faith leaders, community leaders and others, including the South Carolina pastor's wife whom she credits with helping restore her faith in God after the Bidens' son Beau died of cancer in 2015. Jackson's husband is pastor of Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia, where the women met when Joe Biden visited in 2019 as he campaigned for the Democratic presidential nomination. South Carolina is the state that helped set Joe Biden on the path to becoming the nominee in 2020, a feat he hopes to replicate next year as a candidate for reelection. Jill Biden discussed her faith journey during a visit to the church in 2021. Perhaps some of you are even going through it right now,” Jill Biden said.

The percentage of Americans saying the economy is excellent or good rose 6 points to a still-low 20%. On Tuesday morning, Mr. DeSantis discussed military policy outside Columbia, the capital of South Carolina, a state that is dependent on military bases and has a large veteran population. Mr. DeSantis has avoided mainstream news outlets, hoping to take his message directly to conservative audiences. Large donors have met in recent days with Mr. Scott and the wealthy entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy. The DeSantis political operation may be strengthening its jabs against Mr. Trump.

President Joe Biden speaks during a stop at a solar manufacturing company that's part of his "Bidenomics" rollout on Thursday, July 6 in West Columbia, S.C. Meg Kinnard/APPresident Joe Biden reacted to the latest jobs report numbers Friday morning, saying that they are evidence of “Bidenomics in action.”“We are seeing stable and steady growth. That’s Bidenomics—growing the economy by creating jobs, lowering costs for hardworking families, and making smart investments in America,” Biden said in the statement. The US added 209,000 jobs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday, a cooler than expected report and the lowest monthly gain since December 2020. However, with all three major US indexes falling Friday morning, investors are clearly concerned that the cooling of the economy may not be enough to stop the Federal Reserve from once again raising rates.

Simple, Satisfying 3-Ingredient Barbecue Sauces

South Carolina’s contribution to regional American barbecue is mustard sauce. Barbecue buffs — from Columbia, S.C., through Georgia, and in parts of Kentucky and Florida — understand the wonders that mustard can work on pork; how the spice enhances the meat’s sweetness, while the acidity cuts through the fat. Mustard may be the addition of the German immigrants who settled in South Carolina in the 18th century and whose descendants opened barbecue restaurants still revered in the state, such as Bessingers in Charleston, Sweatman’s in Holly Hill and Hite’s in West Columbia. A good mustard sauce is a study in balance: the bite of mustard and mouth-pucker of vinegar offset by the sweetness of honey or brown sugar. Tradition calls for using ballpark-style mustard, but try the suaveness of Dijon-style mustard or a grainy mustard from Meaux in France.

Last year, Verizon VZ.N and AT&T T.N voluntarily agreed to delay some C-Band 5G usage until July as air carriers worked to retrofit airplane altimeters. Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) said Friday its supplier told the airline it would not have enough radio altimeters for Delta’s entire fleet by July 1. Approximately 190 Delta narrowbody aircraft are not yet equipped with updated radio altimeters including all A220s, most A319s and A320s, and some A321s. All Delta widebody aircraft will be equipped with updated radio altimeters prior to July 1, the airline said. Reuters first reported in March that major U.S. wireless carriers agreed to some voluntary actions to address aviation safety concerns.

REUTERS/Sam WolfeWASHINGTON, May 2 (Reuters) - U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told airlines on Tuesday the Biden administration does not plan to extend a July 1 deadline for airlines to retrofit airplane altimeters to address potential interference, the department confirmed. Buttigieg told airlines on a call the department does not plan to extend the deadline and urged them to work aggressively to continue retrofitting airplanes. Last year, Verizon (VZ.N) and AT&T (T.N) voluntarily agreed to delay some C-Band 5G usage until July 1 as air carriers worked to retrofit airplane altimeters. Separately, the FAA on Tuesday proposed seven airworthiness directives (ADs) for many Boeing (BA.N) aircraft due to the potential for 5G C-band interference. They require revising aircraft flight manuals by June 30 to prohibit some landings and include specific operating procedures for calculating landing distances and certain approaches when in the presence of 5G C-band interference.
